Empowering Fashions with Johnny Banana Co.
Model and mama of two, Birgit DeVae, is using her skills and creativity to empower children (and their parents) to feel more comfortable in their own skin with the vibrant fashions of Johnny Banana Co. Birgit understands the power of social media, marketing, and networking to fuel her business, but above all else, her support and uplifting of others have propelled her boutique clothing company.
With goals to continue growing, Birgit’s working to solidify Johnny Banana in the marketplace with a strong brand identity that’s convivial while creating quality fashions available for wholesale across the U.S. and the world. Bright patterns, pops of color, with cuts and seems made to last - this designer knows what mamas and kiddos want in fashion and she’s making it happen.
Johnny Banana’s signature track sets are a clear favorite for children and adults alike, and the youngest members of the Socially Inspired team are loving their looks.
This brand just launched a new look and website in February that features a striking online presence paired with color blocking on Instagram. Inklike black, peppered with a classic pink, varying urban backgrounds and textures keep their aesthetic primed for featuring their blend of cutting-edge and classic fashions.
We had the chance to chat with Birgit about her brand and the launch of her business, Johnny Banana Co, below:
We know that you have a fashion and modeling background, can you tell us how this background fueled your desire to create unique clothing for your family (and beyond?) I have always been entwined with the arts, starting with acting in my first production at 3 and singing since then as well. I began modeling when I was 12 and lived in LA in middle and high school pursuing acting and modeling. I have always been interested in fashion and using clothing to express myself and my creativity. Entering the high fashion and modeling world only expanded that.
When my oldest son, Johnny, was born I searched for unique clothing for him and was unable to find what I wanted. Everything seemed to be covered in cheesy sayings or googly eyes. So, I decided to make what I was unable to find. My focus is on unique pieces that are durable and made of the highest quality. My clothes are modern and versatile enough for dress up or everyday wear but with attention to construction and materials that make them long-lasting and able to stand up to childhood adventures.
What's your favorite piece from your collection right now? The track sets are my signature outfit! They feature a cowl neck hoodie with a modern contrast slant design and slim fit harem-style pants. These sets are available in a variety of colors and prints and in sizes from babies up to adults!
If you could send your clothes to any mom + baby duo... who would rock Johnny Banana Co.? Chrissy Teigen, Luna, and Miles
Who's your celebrity style icon? Blake Lively
What is one thing you wish you knew before launching your business? I wish I had done more to create a solidified brand identity from the beginning and knew more about marketing a new business.
What's one thing you're GLAD you did know before launching your business? Being taught how to sew at a young age by my mom enabled me to be able to start this company. I am so thankful I was empowered to express my creativity and had the skills to bring my ideas to life.
What's your biggest goal for 2020? I want to expand my wholesale offerings and reach across the US and internationally.
Who has inspired you most professionally? I have made so many friends in the small shop world since starting this journey and am continually inspired by the supportive and creative friends I have made. While there can be drama and competition at times, overall I have found an overwhelming amount of support and positivity where everyone tries to build each other up. It is truly inspiring and I firmly believe only good things can come from being a positive supporter of others.
If you could say one thing to someone who just hopped on to your website for the first time - what would it be? Every piece is designed by myself and is truly an expression of my soul. I want the clothes to empower kids (and adults!) to feel comfortable in their own skin and enable them to show off their own beautiful personalities and creativity. At the same time, the pieces are designed in such a way that kids can feel hip and unique but can also be themselves and roll around in the dirt or explore the world without worry.
